Logan Hanzen

Canadian Certified Counsellor

I know what it's like to experience trauma, and I also understand what it takes to heal. As a teenager, my family brought me into a high-control spiritual community that I became deeply indoctrinated by for almost a decade. Leaving required me to confront not only accumulated trauma, but the destabilizing experience of questioning beliefs and doctrines from the community that had once shaped how I understood myself and reality.

Navigating and healing from this experience profoundly influenced my interest in trauma, spiritual and religious harm and cult recovery, spirituality, identity, and embodiment. It also led me to pursue a Master's degree in Psychotherapy and Spirituality so that I could explore these themes through the grounded frameworks of academia and research and support others in the work that I do as a therapist.

Further, as a neurodivergent, White, and Indigenous woman (Swedish, Italian, and Mvskoke Creek), I navigate my unique intersectionality in relationship with my cultural roots, personal values, and societal contexts. My decolonization journey is intimately woven into my cult deconstruction journey, which allows me to hold Western perspectives in one hand while leaving my other hand open to the mysterious nature of consciousness and reality.

I understand what it's like to journey into the depths of the nervous system and feel like you are in a constant battle with your own body and mind. I also understand the courage, bravery, and perseverance that it takes to heal. It is my commitment to draw upon my lived experiences, clinical experience, and education to provide you a therapeutic environment in which you feel deeply seen, met, heard, and supported.

Research

My academic work explores questions at the intersection of psychotherapy, embodiment, consciousness, spirituality, and our understandings of what it means to be human and in relationship with ourselves, others (human and non-human), and the cosmos. My Master's thesis, Embodied Psychotherapy and the New Materialist Turn: A Heuristic Inquiry, explores how embodied and relational perspectives can challenge assumptions that have historically separated mind, body, self, spirit, and world.

My research continues to inform the relational and embodied approach I bring to therapy--particularly my interest in consciousness as well as experiences and belief systems that may not fit neatly within conventional Western cultural and psychological frameworks.
